National Registration and Identification System Project
Project Overview
The programme is implemented through a UNDP-administered basked fund. UNDP is implementing the project in partnership with the National Registration Bureau (NRB). Project donors include the Department for International Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union, Government of Malawi, the Norwegian Government, Irish Aid, USAID and UNICEF. The NRIS Programme is expected to generate transformative benefits and improvements in service delivery, governance, economic and social inclusion.
Project Goal
To ensure a permanent and continuous national registration and identification system is established in Malawi
Project output
- Design, establish and manage the necessary systems, infrastructure and equipment for the National Registration and Identity system, employing biometrically secure Smartcards;
- Supervise the mass registration for all eligible Malawians (an estimated 9 million) within the country in 2017;
- Transition the system to a continuous registration model in 2018 and to develop the capacity and systems of NRB to maintain and operate the system from 2019 onward
- Provide an interface to other public and private sector systems that allow for appropriate data sharing within a legal framework that complies with international principles and standards for the Right to Privacy and Data Protection.
